Though wool can help trap heat and keep you warm, several layers of lightweight clothing are preferable to one thick layer. Wearing tight jeans over your thermal wear can constrict your blood vessels and make movements difficult. Lycra spandex is a lightweight synthetic fiber fabric which stretches well. So, Lycra spandex clothing is best worn over your thermal wear. You can add more layers as the temperature drops.

I wonder if you noticed that most sportswear are made of Lycra spandex. So, before you head off to buy your winter clothing you may want check out if you can pack any of your sportwear with you.

Don’t miss out the padded long cyclist pants. 

I encourage my customers to wear them for their winter holiday overseas. The padding will not show as it will be covered by their long winter jacket and it provides some comfort during the long ride in the plane, train or car.

The leggings of Lycra spandex pants are close fitting and usually with zip enclosures so you can easily wear boots over them.

Do you know that you should buy boots that are one or two size larger than your regular size? 

Bring along your woolen winter socks when you are out choosing your boots. Remember too that you plan to wear them over your thermal wear and Lycra spandex pants.

Why would anyone want a bike with noisy hub?

Only bicycles with higher specifications are installed with hubs that clicks when they turn. I read that the noise comes from the freewheel’s spring-loaded pawls on the hub moving over the ratchet teeth. So, the more pawls a hub has the more engagement points there are, the louder it will sound.

Some of my customers who prefer riding on bicycles with such hubs installed, said that the sound acts like a warning sound to pedestrians and fellow riders on the road. For others, it is the sound of a good hub.

If you check out the technology and design involved in making hubs with more pawls you will understand why they are more expensive.

What is so unique about bicycles?

Do you want to know what is so unique about bicycles as a form of recreation or exercise compared to other form of transport?

When you cycle on a bicycle, you can call yourself “The Champion of the Earth” because you do not require fossil fuel to get you around. It is a recreation where you can get everyone in the family involved because none of you will require a license to start cycling.

For the younger ones, who do not know how to cycle yet, an extension can be added to the bicycle.

You can even bring along a wee one on a front mounted child seat.

When it is too hot to cycle or if it is raining, you can mount your bicycle on a trainer to ride indoor.

Maintenance cost is low as parts and components are generic so you can easily find them in any bicycle shop and get your problem fixed no matter where you are. In fact, some repair work are not too technical that you can learn how to fix them personally.

While you are out exercising on your bicycle, you can also run errands. Just make sure that you have a carrier or a rack installed to hold any purchase. Here is a solution if you can’t install a carrier or rack.

There are many places in your home or its compound where you can easily store your bicycle as it does not take up too much space. You can even hang it from the ceiling right above your shoes cabinet.

You can ride your bicycle anywhere you want to build up your fitness without worrying about leaving a carbon footprint.

Fuel price going up? Start a bike train.

In USA, some parents are running bike trains so that older children who can cycle can get to school safely with their guidance.



In 2014, I paid the bus transport service provider RM180.00 per month to send my daughter to school.  This year, I am paying RM220.00.  With price of fuel increasing, bike train could be one way we can reduce the cost of transporting our children to school.

According to "Safe Routes", it is recommended that there is one adult to manage every three to six children cycling.

The thing is, will it be possible to run a bike train in Malaysia for children living near their schools?
